Matthew Kirk was called to the Bar in 2001 and has been in court pretty much every day since.
In pupillage and early years, Matthew practiced in general common law, gaining experience in both civil and family as well as crime. Eventually, however, the forensic challenge of criminal law and the drama of jury advocacy won out and Matthew has had a pure criminal practice for many years.
Matthew also used to appear regularly in the Mental Health Review Tribunal and retains a particular interest in mental health – of defendants, complainants and witnesses – within his criminal practice.
Matthew has experience of all areas of criminal work, up to the most serious, including all sexual, violent, drug and dishonesty offending. He acts for both prosecution and defence and has appeared regularly before the Court Martial.
Matthew has extensive experience of all types and levels of sexual offending. He has secured acquittals for people facing allegations of rape including parents and step-parents, siblings and wider family members, and people who work in education, social work, the Church, the police or as tattoo artists.
Outside of his professional work, Matthew is closely involved in community politics. He is the Local Authority appointed Governor of a Special School and Pupil Referral Unit.
