Toby Manhire prosecuted a Defendant charged with Causing Grievous Bodily Harm with Intent and Attempting to Inflict Grievous Bodily Harm with Intent against two prison officers in July 2023.

The Defendant randomly attacked two prison officers by throwing boiling water mixed with sugar at them, leaving them with second-degree burns. One prison officer suffered a permanent and life-changing injury. The Defendant claimed he was suffering from psychosis, with two psychiatrists rejecting this.

The Defendant was convicted after trial and was sentenced to 17 years’ imprisonment. He was assessed as being a dangerous offender and was sentenced to an extended determinate sentence.

Toby was instructed by the CPS East of England.
