Defending Children & Young People

Our members regularly prosecute and defend children and young people in the Crown Court and Youth Court. Many of our barristers are authorised and trained  to practise in the Youth Court. Our work in this field spans the full range of criminal offences: from shoplifting to murder.

We are often instructed to appear where a certificate of counsel has been granted by the Court because the case is unusually grave or difficult. Our members are available to draft certificate of counsel applications where required.

We also appear at an appellate level in this developing area of law. Nic Lobbenberg KC and Matthew Kirk appeared in the important case of R v ATD [2023] EWCA Crim 1536 that confirmed and clarified the way young adults are sentenced for crimes they committed as children.
