Background

Ruby O’Connor

Call 2022

Ruby O’Connor has undertaken both her first and second six pupillage with 4BB Chambers, the latter under the supervision of Tim Naik.

During her second six, Ruby successfully defended a domestic criminal damage and harassment trial. The client was acquitted on both counts, on the basis that their behaviour was reasonable in the circumstances. Ruby also prosecuted an appeal against conviction regarding harassment, dealing with a 400+ page bundle. The appeal was dismissed.

Whilst studying the Bar Course, Ruby participated in a variety of pro-bono work. As a volunteer for the North Kensington Law Centre Housing Drop-In, Ruby took case notes on housing matters such as tenant disputes, landlord obligations and s21 notices, alongside assessing clients for legal aid eligibility. Ruby also worked as a BPP Legal Advice Clinic Student Director, creating case files and deciding whether the service could assist the client.

Through the Street Law Research Project, Ruby researched changes to murder legislation after the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022, for the purpose of updating Street Law presentations.

For “Your Lawyer App”, Ruby wrote legal guidance articles and produced voice-overs for legal guidance videos for the public.

Ruby’s project for her LLM(bar), “Rape by deception – how to better protect sexual autonomy”, analysed the legislation concerning consensual sex and deception as to fertility status. Ruby has also completed the ICCA “Advocacy for Children in Conflict with the Law” Training Course, assisting her ability to work with children and young Defendants. Ruby has also received training when she worked as a Teaching Assistant to communicate with individuals with visual impairments, mental health difficulties and learning disabilities.
